Our BA(Hons) Visual Communication in Graphic Design, encourages students to be experimental, developing their own distinct voice and style, whilst also building on conceptual and technical skills, required for industry and the workplace.

During the three year degree course you will develop a solid understanding of graphic design principles through workshops, creative projects ,contextual studies and real design projects recognised by industry to become a versatile designer.

The course is delivered by tutors working within the industry as professional graphics designers, illustrators, typographers, packaging designers and digital screen based media. This allows students to grow and express themselves creatively across a wide range of disciplines from design for print , digital including moving image, app design, website, packaging, publishing, brand identity, typography and persuasive visual messaging, and workshops such as screen printing, letterpress and illustration

Students are also encouraged to partake in live project briefs to help prepare them for their future careers within the creative industries. This enables students to work commercially and develop their preparation of artwork for production and presentational skills.

Graduates have not only gone on to work within the creative industries as graphic designers, but have also diversified into other roles such as art directors, photographers and illustrators.

We have had considerable successions with national design competitions with many students winning over the years, this has helped with our students graduating and working In Graphic Design consultancies in places such as Los Angeles , New York, Dubai, France, Switzerland, Tokyo & Italy.
In the first year we will introduce you to the core elements of communication and design, helping you to gain a solid understanding of visual language, visual identity, visual voice, and typography and letterform. You will also be able to contextualise your work, helping you to develop your own style and approach to meeting design briefs.

During the second year you will develop more critical and analytical skills as you begin to develop the principles and fundamentals from the first year. You will be free to experiment with visual language and make your communication clear and concise. You will be given further context to graphic design, understand publishing design and begin to evaluate your work on a personal and professional level, all helping to prepare you for your final year.

In your final year you will be able to fine-tune your innovative approaches to client briefs and reflect upon past practice. You will undertake your dissertation project and have a thorough understanding of visual language and communication, preparing you for a long and successful career in the industry.

Once you have graduated, you will have a diverse range of transferable skills that will enable you to start you career in this exciting industry. You will be fully equipped to seek out roles and apply your knowledge as a freelance designer, or equally equipped to work in graphic design agencies around the world. Other options could include further study onto MA programmes or complete a Post Graduate Certificate of Education.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need a minimum of: Minimum of 64 UCAS points (160 old system) from a BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma / A Levels / Foundation Diploma / Access Diploma in a related subject; if English is not your first language, an IELTS score of 6.5 with a 6 in writing; proof of qualifications; a satisfactory reference.
